Bethany Hamilton has made a big impact on peoples lives. She has made some people feel happier about themselves. She made them feel like that they were not the only ones.
Bethany was born on February 8th 1990 in Lihue, Hawaii. She has gone through stuff that you would think would never happen to you in a million years and she thought the same, but something she thought would never happen to her happened. She was not ready for it. And I know that any of us would not be ready for it either. In 2003 at age 13 Bethany got her left arm bitten of by a shark. It was a sad time for her family and her family friends that saw it happen. Alana Blanchard, Bethany’s best friend was with her when it happened. She panicked and yelled for her dad once she saw Bethany. From then on every body knew that things would be changed forever.
After that depressing thing happened it made headlines all around the world. It was a miracle that she survived. After time past, Bethany wanted to get back in the water. All she thought about when she came home was when would she be able to get in the water, meaning doing what she loved more than anything else in the world- surf. But things changed in her life after the attack. It was hard for her to do her favorite thing. Her balance was off and with arm it was almost impossible for her to paddle out to the waves. She was even having trouble putting on her bathing suit. But one day she decided that this was the day to get back in the water and try to surf again. She made a special breakfast for her family that morning. That day she asked her parents if she could surf.
It was the day before Thanksgiving, the perfect day to try. She sure did try but she kept on falling and falling. She saw a wave, a wave that was small to her but it was worth going for. The wave lifted her up, up, up. Finally, the moment that Bethany was waiting for, the moment she was up on her surfboard!
Soon after that day she was competing in tons of competitions. She was back in her game. Bethany won lots of awards but not just for surfing, also for being a good person. She won the NNSA national helping kids champion in 2005. She also got a sponsorship by Rip Curl, a clothing and surf company. Here are some other major achievements… the ESPY award in 2004 and 2nd place in ASP world junior championships in 2008. Bethany was a great surfer and a great role model for every one.
She showed what true determination can overcome.
Bethany’s education was not the type of education we have. It was a different type. She was home schooled. I know what you are thinking, lucky her, but she still did school work just like us! It is not like she was not as smart as us at all. A lot of kids are home schooled because they want to focus on a sport that they are really good at. Bethany Hamilton’s sport that she was really good at was surfing, but somebody else’s maybe be baseball or soccer. Bethany wanted to focus on surfing, her number one passion.
These are some facts that may help you learn about Bethany. The shark that bit of her arm was a 14 foot tiger shark. Bethany has compassion towards other people. She never gives up and always tries. Her family videoed lots of stages of her life and important things. It helped the director put together the movie called Soul Surfer. Her height is five feet and eleven inches. Her best year in surfing was 2005. After the shark attack she was asked to come on lots of T.V shows and talk about it.
Faith is a big part of Bethany’s life. Her faith helped her get through losing her arm. God made a big impact on Bethany’s life also because god made her believe that she could surf again and still be the same at it. God gave her hope and Bethany was thankful for that.
Another influence on Bethany’s life was her dad and her best friend Alana Blanchard. Her dad pushed her to get better and he supported her in competitions. He also gave her tips and went out on the beach and videoed her surfing to help her. He spent so much time helping her. Alana cheered her on and sacrificed things for Bethany. She made Bethany smile and she surfed with her which brought Bethany joy!
Bethany is one of the best role models I know. She is inspiring and brave. The type of person that never gives up. A person that everybody should look up to! She is also kind hearted and helps children and people that need help. She has made a huge impact on people! And she is a great person to talk to when things are not going right, because she has gone through something that she cannot change ever. Bethany is somebody that I think is a hero. She taught me that even when you think that things are the worst ever to keep going and never give up on your dream. This is a great lesson that Bethany taught me!
